Experience Italy's artisan beauty as you never have before. Hold it in your hands.

Could you imagine coming to Italy, visiting historic ceramic studios and artisan potters and firing ceramics in a fire pit on a beautiful Umbrian farm?  Attending a cooking class at one of the top rated Agriturismi and cooking schools in Umbria? Taking a meditational walk along the wooded pathways that Francis of Assisi walked on?  Welcome  to the Great Italian Pottery, Food & Wine Workshop. Hosted by Letizia Mattiacci, owner and instructor at the Alla Madonna del Piatto B&B and Cooking School and Diana Strinati Baur, ceramic artist and creative mentor, this workshop will focus on the wonderful ceramic  history and producers of central Italy, the cuisine and wines of Umbria - and we will get hands on in Letizia's wonderful olive grove by pit firing ceramics together.

This workshop is for makers and for people who would like to understand more about the ceramic process.  We'll have time to talk about different methods of ceramic production and gain an understanding of how nature can influence this most ancient of artisan crafts.  It's also a workshop for food and wine lovers, as we'll be cooking together with Letizia in her kitchen. We'll visit historic towns like Asissi, Foglino and Gubbio, and walk the path of St. Francis of Assisi.

Workshop Dates:  June 7th, 2019 through June 11th, 2019

Saturday, June 8th

We'll rise early for breakfast and prepare our pre-bisqued ceramics for pit firing.  If you are a potter, you're invited to bring two bisqued pieces of your own to fire.  If you are not, Diana will have made two pieces for you that you'll be able to fire.  All the materials will be provided.  Pit firing is an ancient technique that utilizes copper, iron, seaweed, rope, salt and other materials to create interesting surfaces on ceramics.  The finished pieces will not be glazed; they will have interesting and unique decorated surfaces that one can only achieve through the combination of certain elements and fire.

We'll enjoy a light lunch and a meditational walk in the Franciscan woodlands, following the trails that Francis of Assisi walked along.

In the afternoon, we'll set the pots afire in the pit.  We'll get to know each other and discuss pottery and different techniques of making and firing.

Dinner will be an Umbrian BBQ as we guard and tend to the pit.

Sunday, June 9th

We'll rise, enjoy breakfast and remove our pots from the pit, clean them and if desired, wax them.

Around 11 am, we'll make our way into Letizia's kitchen for a hand-on cooking class.  Letizia is the author of the best-selling cookbook A Kitchen With a View and has been profiled in the New York Times.  She tours and gives lectures on the history of Umbrian cooking and local ingredients, and is a regular writer for The American.  Her renowned cooking class will have us making two courses, which we'll enjoy immediately after the lesson.

Afterwards, we'll rest for a bit.  Since we'll have had our big meal at lunch, we'll head into Assisi for a free evening.  You'll be on your own for dinner, and we'll meet up to come back to the B&B at a designated time.

Monday, June 10th

We'll rise, enjoy our breakfast and head out to Deruta, home of the Majolica pottery movement.  We'll visit two producers of authentic Deruta Majolica.

After enjoying a lunch out, we'll visit an artisan pottery in Gualdo Tadino, one of Umbria's most historically significant ceramics villages.  This will be followed by a stroll in the nearby town of Gubbio.

For dinner, we'll head back to the B&B and enjoy the rest of the evening relaxing and watching the sunset.

Tuesday, June 11th

After breakfast, it will be time to say goodbye and head back to Assisi for departure.
